What's the Jelly?

Imagine That!

8/1-9/4/16: Balance for All

I wanted to make my climbing partner battle a dragon puppet while climbing.  Sadly, I don't have a foam sword, so we had to use an all puppet cast.
*update, I now possess a stuffed sword.  We'll have to bring the dragons back to Red Rock for a re-match!*

We're bringing everything into balance on the water, the wall, and the mat. Kids will create climbing traverse stories, visit far away lands with yoga poses, and shoot rainbow balls out of a unicorn popper.  How can you go wrong?

  • Old Macdonald Had a Dragon By Ken Baker
  • Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin
  • The Best Pet of All by David LaRochelle
  • Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
  • Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great by Bob Shea
  • Fairies at Bedtime by Karen Wallace
  • The Stinky Cheese Man & Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka

Mike the Knight was very popular in the pool this week!

Swim
Swimmers will learn to keep the body in balance during freestyle and to use an effective pull.  We will work on getting into a back float from a standing position and recovering from a sinking float.  These are great safety skills to add to every swimmers quiver!
Picture
  • Play with balance while kicking
  • Gain independence on back floats
  • Recover from a sinking float
  • Swimming arms (freestyle)
  • Hippo surfing!!

Climb
Climbers will be playing with balance on and off of the wall.  We will learn to flag (using one foot to balance rather than support weight),  and experiment with different positions to utilize sloper holds.
  • Identifying and using Sloper holds
  • Recognizing and climbing on Slab walls
  • Slacklining
  • Balanced body position
  • Flagging to maintain balance
  • Balance beam obstacle course
  • Recovering from an off balance move
Yoga
Can you use your balance to make it past the dragons and save the castle?  Yogis will learn some tricky yoga poses involving balance and concentration.  We will practice a walking meditation while balancing.
  • Balance Labyrinth Meditation
  • Dragon Fire Breath
  • Tricky Cat Sequence
  • Balance Poses: warrior III, side plank, dancer, eagle, crow
  • Story Poses: low lunge, gate, tree, standing side bend, 5 pointed star
